Today, embark on a journey to Anuradhapura, one of Sri Lanka’s ancient capitals, approximately 4 hours away. This UNESCO World Heritage site is renowned for its well-preserved ruins, including the Ruwanwelisaya Stupa, a massive Buddhist monument, and Mihintale, where Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka. Explore the sacred sites, marvel at the towering stupas, and discover the rich history of this ancient city.
Continue your journey north to Jaffna, a 4-hour drive. Known for its strong Tamil heritage and unique culture, Jaffna offers a mix of historical sites and vibrant local life. Visit landmarks such as the Jaffna Fort and Nallur Kandaswamy Temple, an iconic Hindu temple. Discover the city’s colonial past and the cultural richness that defines the northern region of Sri Lanka.
Today, enjoy a full day of sightseeing in Jaffna. Start with a visit to the Dutch Fort, a testament to the city’s colonial history. Explore the bustling Central Market and absorb the local culture. A ferry ride will take you to Nagadeepa Temple, an important Buddhist site, followed by a visit to the Nageswaran Temple, a significant Hindu temple with intricate architecture.
After breakfast, depart for Trincomalee, a scenic coastal town known for its natural harbors and historical importance. The journey will take you through beautiful landscapes, with the option to stop and enjoy views along the way.
In the morning, drive to Sigiriya, approximately 2 hours away. This iconic UNESCO World Heritage site is home to the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, an ancient royal citadel. Climb the steep rock stairs to reach the summit, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views and fascinating ruins, including frescoes and an ancient water garden.
Today, visit Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka’s medieval capital, and explore the remarkable Royal Palace, Gal Vihara, and the vast Parakrama Samudra, an ancient reservoir. Polonnaruwa’s well-preserved ruins provide an intriguing glimpse into Sri Lanka’s past. Enjoy a traditional Sri Lankan farmer’s lunch before returning to Sigiriya.
Begin the day with a visit to the stunning Dambulla Cave Temple, a series of Buddhist cave temples filled with murals and statues. Before departing Ella, take in the views from the Nine Arches Bridge and stop at Ravana Waterfall. Then, travel towards Tissamaharama, a gateway to Yala National Park, where you’ll stay overnight before your exciting safari adventure.
